GALLERY CLOSURES:

The following galleries will be closed on Jan. 21, 22, 23 and 24 and March 17, 18 and 19 for a cultural collaboration - Discovery Lab, Patents Pending, Young at Art and Solve It.

DISCOVERY Lab Programming 

Workshops 

DISCOVERY Lab offers a series of workshops for guests interested in creating designs and thinking outside the box. Workshops are available for $5 for Members and $10 for General Admission. All workshops are located in the Tech-Lab Space at the DISCOVERY Lab on the second floor. 

  • Build it Up!
    • Time: 2 p.m. 
    • Description: Join DISCOVERY to use the design thinking process during a collaborative building challenge and test the strength of your structure.

 

  • Open Making Sessions
    • Guests can create custom designs, learn about circuits, make clay creations, explore 3D sculptures, discover architecture designs and more. 

3D Print Shop 

  • Print Shop Time: 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. 

Workshop Times: 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

  • Description: DISCOVERY Children’s Museum offers state-of-the-art technology with DISCOVERY Lab’s new 3D printing stations. Guests can purchase tickets to learn about the world of 3D design. Daily workshops are available for $3 for Members and $6 for General Admission.

CAD Classes

  • Time: Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. 
  • Description: Learn to work with TinkerCAD, a 3D modeling program to design and 3D print a unique Boxie Bot accessory. CAD classes are available for $15 for Members and $30 for General Admission. Classes are recommended for ages 8 and up and an adult 18 years or older must accompany child for duration of the class. 

Departmental Programming – NEW

January Programming:

  • New Year’s Celebration Continued – Jan. 4 – 10 

Museum members can continue ringing in the new year as the celebrations continue at DISCOVERY. Guests can design their own 2020 calendars, create New Year’s inspired glasses and learn how long it takes the planets to make one rotation around the sun. 

  • Welcome Run!Jump!Fly! – Jan. 11 – 17

Guests are invited to join DISCOVERY in welcoming its new traveling exhibit, Run!Jump!Fly!, which focuses on the many benefits of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle through collaborative and hands-on activities. Members can create their own dance routine with movement cards, create a motion inspired collage, and join in the exploration of the human body by using anatomical models. 

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Jan. 18 – 24

Join DISCOVERY to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with fun, interactive activities. Museum goers can create an inspirational piece of art, as well as one inspired by peace, and observe a meaningful infographic timeline while listening to the historic “I Have a Dream” speech.

  • Chinese New Year Celebration – Jan. 25 – 31 

DISCOVERY welcomes guests to celebrate the Chinese New Year with the Year of the Rat inspired activities – including creating a rat puppet inspired by Chinese art, learning about the Year of the Rat and how Chinese New Year is celebrated and exploring skull and tooth specimens from different species of rodents in Patents Pending. 

 

February Programming:

  • Black History Month – Feb. 1 – 28

Throughout February, DISCOVERY will celebrate Black History Month with special programming. Guests can explore artwork that honors Rosa Park’s legacy in the civil Rights movement and the contributions from African American artists Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett and Jean-Michel Basquiat. In addition, museum goers can celebrate the contributions of Henrietta Lacks and her “Immortal” cells, read The Tortoise and the Hare illustrated by Jerry Pinkney, celebrate the scientific accomplishments of George Washington Carver and his innovative botanical work, recreate the scene of a popular African Folk Tale and celebrate Alexa Canady, the first female African American neurosurgeon and her contributions to the world of neurology.

  • Presidents’ Day Celebration - Feb. 17 

DISCOVERY is celebrating Presidents’ Day all day long with special programming. Museum goers can learn about The White House while designing their own replica and exploring a variety of artwork highlighting the Nation’s Presidents, then use art materials to create a poster honoring their favorite president. In addition, guests can learn about the President’s role in our country and how this role works alongside other branches of government in Patents Pending. 

 

March Programming:

  • National Nutrition Month – Feb. 29 – March 27

Join DISCOVERY to celebrate National Nutrition Month with nutrition inspired activities – including creating a collage using different healthy foods, exploring the similarities and differences between fruits and vegetables and learning balanced portion sizes demonstrated in MyPlate, the successor of the food pyramid. In addition, guests can learn why it’s important to stay active while dancing to music and exploring physical fitness as well as learning about why it’s important to keep the environment healthy by creating artwork using recycled materials, creating beautiful landscapes inspired by our surroundings and exploring how the environment affects our health.

DISCOVERING Science

Tuesday, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, 11 and 18  

DISCOVERY will host DISCOVERING Science on Tuesday, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, 11 and 8. Participants ages 18 months to three years old and their caretakers will explore hands-on science-based activities while building developmental skills during this interactive 4-week session. Registration for this workshop is $60 for Members and $135 for Non-Members. Workshop spaces are limited to 15 children and their caretakers, and attendees must register for all four workshop sessions.

 

Run! Jump! Fly!: Adventures in Action – Member Preview

Friday, Jan. 10

5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Members can join DISCOVERY for a special preview of its new traveling exhibit, Run! Jump! Fly!: Adventures in Action on Friday, Jan. 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The interactive exhibit encourages visitors to try out activities they may have never encountered before and revisit familiar activities in new ways. The new exhibit strives to strengthen children’s health and physical fitness through play and interaction while testing balance, strength, coordination and endurance in many fun-filled ways. Guests can try out surfing, snowboarding and Kung Fu in imaginative surroundings and scramble though a climbing canyon.

 

Kids Night Out

Friday, Jan. 17 

5:30 – 8 p.m.

DISCOVERY Children’s Museum is hosting a Kids’ Night Out Friday Jan. 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Parents can drop off their kids for a fun-filled evening full of art and science activities, as well as facilitated play throughout the entire museum. All kids must be five to 10 years old to attend. Light bites and special treats will be provided. Entry for each child is $40 for general admission and $20 for museum members. Run! Jump! Fly!: Adventures in Action

DISCOVERY welcomes its newest exhibit, Run! Jump! Fly!: Adventures in Action opening on Saturday, Jan. 11 through Sunday, May 3. The interactive exhibit encourages visitors to try out activities they may have never encountered before and revisit familiar activities in new ways. The new exhibit strives to strengthen children’s health and physical fitness through play and interaction while testing balance, strength, coordination and endurance in many fun-filled ways. Guests can try out surfing, snowboarding and Kung Fu in imaginative surroundings and scramble though a climbing canyon. This exhibit welcomes all ages; however, the suggested age group is five to 12 years of age.

·         You and Me ($85), includes admission for up to two visitors;

·         Inventor ($145), includes admission for up to four visitors, plus two free guest passes;

·         Imagine ($195), includes admission for up to six visitors, plus two free guest passes;

·         DISCOVERY ($500), includes admission for up to 10 visitors, six free guest passes, four named cardholders, and 15 percent discount for one DISCOVERY Birthday Experience

 

Teacher Discount and Complimentary Admission Policy

DISCOVERY Children’s Museum will offer complimentary and discounted admission to teachers in the Las Vegas Valley, determined by the purpose of their visit. 

  • Complimentary Admission is offered to teachers planning a field trip to the museum. Teachers must call ahead to make a reservation, present their school or district identification, and have no children accompanying them. 
  • Discounted Admission is offered as a “thank you” to all teachers and educators; All teachers will receive a 50 percent discount with their school or district identification, while their family members pay full admission price. 

 

Birthday Experiences

Birthday Experience Packages Include:

At DISCOVERY Children’s Museum, birthday celebrations are extra special and extra easy. Every birthday includes fun-filled, unforgettable experiences with all-access to the museum’s nine galleries packed with extraordinary hands-on adventures that focus on science, nature, art and early childhood education. Pricing for DISCOVERY’s birthday experience begin at $395 for a group of up to 32 people. Packages include but are not limited to 90 minutes of party room festivities, special birthday experience activity, birthday cake from Freed’s Bakery, party favors, music, video slide show, optional gift registry and more. Birthday Experiences are available during regular museum operating hours on Saturday and Sunday only. VIP Birthday Experience available Sunday only. Ongoing Exhibits and Programming 

Level 1 

The Summit

The Summit is a 70-foot tower that ascends all three floors of the museum and pinches through the roof. The 12-level tower includes climbing and sliding structures, as well as hands-on components that facilitate exploration of different strands of science, including sound, air pressure, earth, flight, electricity, magnets, space, and light. 

Water World

Water World lets visitors celebrate the movement and power of water by letting them play and work with water in a variety of hands-on ways, like launching balls into winding tracks, guiding boats through a lock system, and using blowers to create currents. 

Fantasy Festival

The Fantasy Festival gallery takes kids to a new level of creative play with a life size ship, castle and stage to inspire dramatic exploration. Visitors who enter the DISCOVERY Castle can become princesses, jesters, knights and queens, enjoy a puppet show, invent new castle models, and develop their own productions with story boards. Aboard the ship, visitors can load cargo, fire cannons from the ship, and use a map and compass to set a new course. 

Toddler Town

Toddler Town is a desert-themed exhibition designed for ‘Little Learners,’ from birth to five years old with accompanying adults. Tots can load “rocks” into an overhead bucket system, discover Nevada’s native animals, and become train engineers as they role-play and explore structures designed to enhance their socialization and manipulative skills. 

 

Level 2 

DISCOVERY Lab

DISCOVERY Lab is filled with state-of-the-art technology for all to enjoy including laser cutting, 3D printing and more. The DISCOVERY Lab brings the newest intriguing technologies to life in a hands-on makerspace area. The creative space will offer daily presentations featuring a science, technology, engineering, art and mathematical focus while hosting interactive demonstrations, summer camp experiences, an open-making area, guided-making workshops and more. Entry to the DISCOVERY Lab is free, with additional costs for guided-making workshops. 

Eco City

Eco City is an environmentally friendly metropolis where visitors learn how people live and work together in their community. Key activities include depositing and withdrawing money from Wells Fargo Bank, buying groceries at Smith’s Grocery Store, getting a smoothie at Eco Café or visiting Sunrise Children’s Hospital. Visitors can now welcome the Raiders to Las Vegas and learn more about the construction of The Raiders Stadium at the newest feature, Raiders Kids Construction Zone. Visitors will have multiple opportunities to learn about green living and making choices in the real world. Guests can also check out the newest addition to Eco City, the Subaru Car Care Center which is fully equipped with a replica of the Subaru Ascent and showroom and offers a hands-on opportunity to learn the ways in which the automotive industry is working to go more green. 

 

Level 3 

Young at Art

Young at Art lets imagination come alive in a Dr. Seuss-like environment. Visitors explore the “language” of art through hands-on investigations of the elements of art: color, line, shape, texture, space and form. Surrounded by whimsical wall murals, visitors explore each of the elements of art through interactive components and combine the elements into unique, individualized artworks at “creative stations” throughout the gallery.

Solve It! Mystery Town

The Solve It! exhibit investigates the art of investigation with continuously changing scenarios that allow visitors to pursue answers to questions that eventually reveal a completed puzzle. Solve It! highlights skills central to investigation, including evidence sorting and dating, measurement, examination and comparison of objects, decoding, and bone identification. 

Patents Pending

Patents Pending is a lively laboratory environment devoted to experimentation, invention, problem-solving, and tinkering. This exhibit tests visitors with design and engineering challenges that allow them to create and test their own ideas, with prompts like Can you create something that will withstand a 14-foot drop? A sudden blast of air?Other stations like Contraption Challenge allow both children and adults to test cause and effect with construction challenges.
