Can You Buy Me the Wind?

February 27, 2015

"Mommy, Can you Buy me the Wind?"  Has your child ever come up with one of these doozies?

Author Steven Schoenfeld's daughter was trying to fly a kite on a windless day.  Her grandmother explained to her that the kite would not fly because there was no wind.  His adorable four year old's response was " Well then can you buy me the wind?".  This questioning ignited a spark in Schoenfeld to address the fine line that we walk as parents.  On one hand you want to provide everything that you can for your kids, but on the other hand you also want them to learn about the real world where everything is not bought for you or handed to you.
Can You Buy Me the Wind? was written to address this in a fun and light-hearted way.

Sammy, the child in the story, is allowed to select the gift of her choice from her visiting grandparents.  However, they are not going to just buy it for her.... she needs to earn it!  Sammy tackles the tasks head on and each day earns a piece of the kite.  She learns about working for things she wants but when her kite won’t fly because there is no wind she learns the most important lesson of all!

Sometimes the things we need the most in life cannot be bought, we just need to continue to work hard, be patient and most important… be a good person.

What a wonderful lesson to teach your child!
