As many of you know April is Autism Awareness month. The world day of awareness is April 2. If you are new to Summerlin-NW Las Vegas Macaroni Kid you may not know that I'm a RBT, Registered Behavior Technician and former self contained teacher.
This makes bringing awareness especially close to my heart.
Here are a few things I think everyone should know about autism.
- "If you've met a person with autism, you've only met one person with autism." (Steven Shore) Since it is a spectrum disorder no one on the spectrum is alike. Two people with autism would be as similar as you and the person sitting next to you.
- While a person with autism may have stereotypical behaviors not all people with autism have the same behaviors.
- 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with autism and it is 4 times more prevalent in males
- Autism occurs in all races, socio-economic levels, and cultures
- Being autistic does not mean that a person is really good with numbers or memorization. Some people with autism have remarkable memory and number skills. Some do not. Again, symptoms and severity are individual.
- Individuals with autism process differently but still have the same wants and needs as anyone else.
